There weren’t many announced releases that got me as hyped as Maribou State’s sophomore album. After their incredible 2015 debut “Portraits” I thought it was nearly impossible to release anything new that reaches the high bar that they’ve set back then.
To my relief, they’ve managed to deliver again.
Continued collaboration with London singer Holly Walker ensures top notch vocals on “Nervous Tics”, “Slow Heat” but also “Glasshouses”. The latter is my favourite track of the album and comes with amazing strings as well as an incredibly lush guitar, accompanied by engaging vocals.
Sutble sampling, like vocals from Aretha Franklin’s “Soul Serenade” on the intro track are a fantastic example of the art of incorporating existing material into new compositions.
With over 114 plays this month it came naturally to add the delish turquoise 180g LP to my record collection. All in all a great release and definitely my record of the month, although personally I have to admit that I’d still pick “Portraits” over “Kingdoms In Colour” without hesitation.
